Link Between High Blood Pressure and Fertility Treatments - 09/05/2007
A recent study appearing in this month’s issue of Fertility and Sterility found that the risk of developing high blood pressure (gestational hypertension) and pre-eclampsia is higher in pregnant women who underwent fertility treatments compared to women who had natural pregnancies.
Pre-eclampsia is a condition that results from high blood pressure and can deteriorate multiple systems in the body. Pre-eclampsia is responsible for up to 15 percent of the 5,000 pregnancy-related deaths that occur each year worldwide.
The study looked at over 5,000 women who gave birth between 1998 and 2006. Within six months of giving birth, researchers interviewed the women about their socio-demographic and medical conditions, asking if they had gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia and whether they had used infertility treatments.
The study found that women in the study who used infertility treatments, even after adjusting the data for risk factors, like multiple fetuses, were 30 percent more likely to develop gestational hypertension and 20 percent more likely to develop pre-eclampsia compared to women who didn’t use fertility treatments.
