Tomato Soup May Boost Male Fertility - 07/28/2007
Researchers from the University of Portsmouth UK have conducted a study suggesting that eating a bowl of tomato soup a day may actually improve male fertility. The research team studied the effects of lycopene, an antioxidant that gives the tomato its red colouring, on sperm health in a group of six healthy men in their early forties. Men who suffer from infertility often have low lycopene levels in semen. Lycopene is believed to fight off free radicals in the body, thereby increasing male fertility. Men participating in the study showed elevated lycopene levels by 7 to 12%. Further studies will be conducted in order to establish the effects of tomato soup on men with fertility problems. Other foods containing lycopene include watermelon, grapefruit, guava and papaya. The report appears in the British Journal of Urology.
