Obese women turn to surgery in order to get pregnant - 01/09/2008

According to a news report, an increasing number of obese women are undergoing stomach surgery in order to get pregnant. Obese women are 50 percent less fertile than those women of normal weight and in London, there is a rise in women who want to be fitted with gastric bands in order to lose weight. The gastric band stomach surgery is a procedure, which involves reducing the size of the stomach with a tie. This way, only small meals can be eaten and obese women can lose more weight.

Another study about obese women and fertility found that conception rates drop as a woman's size increases. According to the study, women with a BMI of more than 35 were 49 percent less likely to get pregnant than women with a BMI of between 21 and 29.

Obesity is also linked to Polycystic ovarian syndrome which is one of the main causes of infertility.
