Lead causes fertility problems in both men and women - 12/20/2007
In a recent news report from the Lamar Ledger, exposure to lead is unsafe for everyone, however, it carries more risks for young children and pregnant women. Exposure to lead can affect a child's nervous system, kidneys and hearing and it can also cause learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder and decreased intelligence in children. In addition, it can lead to speech and language disorder as well as poor muscle coordination and poor muscle and bone growth.
On the other hand, pregnant women are more at risk of having an unborn baby and other defects if exposed to a lot of lead. It can also cause infertility in men and women and high blood pressure, digestive problems, nerve disorders and many other problems.
Doctors advise that you test your water at home for lead and use cold water while drinking and cooking. Also, avoid drinking water from lead crystals, lead glazed pottery or porcelain. And if you suspect any presence of lead poisoning in your home or your area, seek help right away.
