Teenage weight can determine fertility in adult life - 12/11/2007
According to a Finnish study in which 1,300 adults participated, your weight during your teenage years could indicate your fertility later in life. In the study, researchers examined and monitored the adults for 27 years beginning from their adolescence and found out that a person's Body Mass Index (BMI) in their teenage years had long-term effects, which played a big role into their adult life.
The study also revealed that the women with low BMI's usually have irregular periods while low BMI in men results in poor sperm quality. On the other hand, obesity in men raises the risk of erectile dysfunction while in women; it can lead to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, which causes infertility. Obsity has also been linked to musculoskeletal and cardiac problems, which reduces libido and causes coital difficulties.
In order to improve fertility, experts advise individuals to keep their weight not less than 95 percent or more than 120 percent of the recommended BMI.
