Laptops may reduce male fertility - 12/04/2007
According to researchers at the State University of New York, placing your laptop on your lap can affect male fertility. Professor Yefim Sheynkin and his fellow teammates who conducted the study reported last week that the heat generated by laptops raises scrotal temperature and thus, increases the risk of infertility in men.
In the study, researchers examined 29 young men between ages 21 and 35 for two sessions in a temperature controlled room. Participants had their body temperatures recorded and then were given working and non-working laptops. During this time, the men's scrotal temperatures were also recorded every three minutes and the temperatures on the bottom of the laptops were also examined.
After the study, researchers found that scrotal temperature rose around 2.7 degree Celsius while using working laptops, which is good enough to cause infertility. Researchers also warned men to think twice before balancing laptops on their laps again.
