Epilepsy drugs may decrease fertility - 10/31/2007
Researchers at the National Center for Epilepsy have found recently that anti-epileptic drugs such as Carbamazepine and Valproate could decrease fertility. The two most common anti-epileptic drugs which are used to treat ADD, ADHD, Schizophrenia and grand mal and absence seizures could lower fertility in both men and women and increase reproductive disorders. However, researchers also say that although the study found a decrease in fertility, it does not mean that it is permanent. Once patients stop using the drugs, their hormone levels function normally and their fertility rates also increase.
Anti-epileptic drugs should not be discontinued without consulting your physician. Anti-epileptic drugs have also been known in previous years to cause pregnancy problems. These include autism and lower IQ of your baby.
