Bacteria threatens male fertility too - 10/26/2007
A new research study has found that Chlamydia, the most common sexually transmitted infection in Britain can make men infertile. In previous years, Chlamydia, an infection with few symptoms was known only to affect female fertility. But today, studies have shown that this condition can damage male fertility too.
José Luis Fernandez of the Juan Cana-lejo University Hospital in La Coruña, tested sperm samples of 193 men, out of which 143 were infected with Chlamydia. The study also revealed that an average of 35 percent of the infected men's sperm was damaged, 3 times greater than a normal male's sperm. After the testing, the infected males were treated with antibiotics, which removed the bacteria by producing new sperm and improving sperm quality.
In 2005, in Britain, there were 109,958 cases of Chlamydia. Doctors have warned young men about the increasing number of diagnoses over the years. Doctors have also advised to seek treatment before it's too late.
