How Having an Older Brother Affects Your Fertility - 10/01/2007
Researchers at the University of Sheffield have found that individuals who have an older brother procreate less than those who have an older sister. Researchers looked at the records of over 650 Finnish women spanning across three generations and traced the survival and reproductive success of siblings with an older brother versus an older sister. The study, appearing in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, found that women with older brothers produced 27 percent fewer children than those with an older sister.
The study is the first to look at the long-term consequences on fertility in individuals who were born after their mothers gave birth thier brother(s). This study supplements existing evidence of how boys are more costly to produce and take care of than girls, as well as how maternal lifespan is reduced after giving birth to boys.
