Fat, Smoke, and Booze Attacks Male Fertility - 09/13/2007
Reproductive experts warn men over 40 that stomach fat, smoke, and alcohol will attack their sperm and decrease their chances of fatherhood. Other male fertility offenders besides obesity, smoking, and drinking include recreational drugs, caffeine, and toxic chemicals. Similarly, researchers now agree that male fertility goes downhill with age, similar to what women experience after the age of 35. Dr Anne Clark, chairwoman of the Fertility Society of Australia's fertility protection group, explains that sperm fragmentation (breakage in DNA) increases with age, particularly after the age of 40. Also, a poor lifestyle can cause rapid regression in sperm quality. In fact, studies found that men who have more than 20 percent of their sperm “fragmented” will triple or quadruple the risk of miscarriage in their partner. However, the good news is men can apply the brakes to their downhill ride by eating healthier, shedding excessive pounds, and cutting down on their smoking and drinking habits.
