Benefits of Ultrasound Guidance in IVF - 08/22/2007
A new study published in this month’s issue of Fertility and Sterility reviewed the use of the highly debatable ultrasonography to guide the intrauterine embryo transfer (ET) catheter in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Researchers in the study looked at 5,968 ET in 25 studies and found that the rates of live births, pregnancy, and successful implantation improved significantly with ultrasound guidance. Researchers also found no difference in the rates of miscarriages, multiple pregnancies, and ectopic pregnancies among women who used the ultrasound guidance compared to women who underwent IVF without the ultrasonography.
This meta-analysis suggests that fertility clinics will benefit from the use of the ultrasound during IVF. Since, even with the advancement in fertility treatments, about 85 percent of the embryos inserted into the uterine cavity often fail to implant.
