NHS Fertility Clinic To Treat Single Women and Lesbian Couples - 07/15/2007
The reproductive medicine unit at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Trust is proposing to treat single women and lesbian couples who have no medical problems affecting fertility. The proposal is based on the belief that it would be discriminatory to deny women access to fertility treatment on the basis that they do not have a male partner. The government has drafted the Human Tissue and Embryos bill which would remove the legal responsibility for fertility clinics to consider the presence of a father as part of the eligibility criteria for fertility treatment. The leader of the donor insemination program at the clinic notes that the World Health Organisation (WHO) recognizes the fulfillment of one’s reproductive wish as a human right. However, she warns that single women should not be offered NHS treatment until they reach their mid30s.
