Pre-Implantation Screening May Not Boost Pregnancy - 07/10/2007
According to researchers from the Centre for Reproductive Medicine of the Academic Medical Centre of the University of Amsterdam, pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS) may not improve pregnancy success rates in women undergoing IVF. Pre-implantation screening has been used as a mandatory procedure for the purpose of improving IVF outcomes, particularly in women of advanced age. However, the study followed 408 women between the ages of 35-41 who were undergoing IVF, and found that women who did not undergo PGS had both a higher chance of becoming pregnant as well as having a live birth. The results suggest that PGS may actually hinder pregnancy in older women undergoing IVF. Further studies should be conducted in order to further analyze the effects of PGS for women in other age groups.
