Doctors Restore Fertility With Ovarian Graft - 07/10/2007
A Belgian gynaecologist, Jacques Donnez, claims to have restored a woman’s fertility using grafted ovarian tissue donated by the patient’s sister. The patient, who is in her mid thirties, has been suffering form infertility caused by chemotherapy and total body irradiation treatment as part of a bone marrow transplant procedure which she had undergone over a decade ago. Since the ovarian graft transplant was performed at the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc in Brussels one year ago, the woman has been menstruating regularly and her ovarian functions seem to be restored. Two of the woman’s eggs have been removed and fertilized with sperm injections to produce two embryos for in vitro fertilization (IVF). This marks the first successful ovarian graft by a non-identical twin sister. The patient’s sister did nonetheless prove to be a compatible donor based on genetic human leukocyte antigen (HLA) matching, which regulates immune system response to transplanted tissue.
