MIF Findings Could Lead to New Diagnosis - 06/29/2007
A new study appearing in the latest issue of Molecular Medicine outlines findings of a substance in semen that may help diagnose male infertility. Researchers from the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research have identified a substance known as macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) that is responsible for the maturation of sperm necessary for conception. The study followed 68 men who were suffering from infertility, alongside 28 controls with healthy reproductive functioning. Those with infertility problems had MIF levels that were either too high or too low, while fertile men had MIF levels that are considered normal. MIF is associated with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and sepsis. The findings could lead to new diagnostic testing to determine male fertility status, as well as pave the way for further treatment of infertility.
