IVF Boom For Women in Their 40s - 06/06/2007
According to data published by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), the number of British women receiving IVF treatment in their 40s has doubled in the past seven years. In 2006, 6,174 women between the ages of 40 and 45 received this type of infertility treatment using their own eggs, while several hundreds more did so using donor eggs. Fertility specialists suggest that the numbers reflect the growing trend of women waiting until their 30s and beyond to try getting pregnant. However, IVF treatment has low success rates among women in this age group, and can potentially pose health risks to both the mother and the child if conception occurs.
