Link Between Lupus and Infertility Treatment in Men - 06/28/2007
A study published in the July issue of Arthritis and Rheumatism suggests that sperm abnormalities in men with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is somehow related to intravenous fertility treatment with immunosuppressant cyclophosphamide (IV CYC). Researchers from Brazil compared 25 men with SLE (an autoimmune disease) with a control group of 35 healthy men. Men with SLE who had previously undergone IV CYC treatment were associated with lower testicular volume, sperm count, sperm motility, sperm volume and normally formed sperm. The results suggest that IV CYC treatment may compromise fertility in men with lupus, making it important for these patients to consider freezing and storing sperm in the early stages of the disease.
